Young people can come together to enjoy doing things such as cooking, watching films, drama, creative writing, music, arts & crafts. The Tunbridge Wells VAWK centre offers a comfortable environment and modern facilities for young people to relax and socialise in.
‘You can meet people that have had the same experiences as you, to know you’re not alone. I feel like I’ve made a friend.’ ‘R’ age 14
121 befriending matches local volunteer mentors with young people aged 8-16 years who may be on the Autistic Spectrum, vulnerable, socially isolated, or young carers, trying to keep on top of their schooling whilst coping with their caring roles at home. Many have been bullied at school and as a consequence their education has suffered. Schools cannot always accommodate those young people whose learning style is active, practical and visual. We currently support 36 families in the Tunbridge Wells area. Volunteers meet regularly with their young person giving them individual attention, building their trust, listening without being judgmental and sharing in new experiences. Our project receives one referral a day and we have a growing waiting list.
One parent wrote‘121 has been a lifeline which came along just at the right time.’
We always need more volunteers especially males to be role models for our young male referrals. You could make such a difference to a young person’s life and in doing so perhaps change your own.
