John Spare, President, Voluntary Action within Kent

It is with great sadness that we let you all know of the death of John Spare, our President, and great supporter over the last 50 years. Sadly John passed away on Wednesday 5 th March after a short illness. John founded the Tunbridge Wells Council for Voluntary Service, which grew into Voluntary Action within Kent, back in 1964. John remained a guiding light in shaping all we do now. John unfailingly was available to provide valuable advice, guidance and support whenever needed. VAWK is proud, and lucky, to have had John as our President. A true gentleman and inspiration always, John will be sorely missed by all at VAWK, and indeed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to Pam and John’s family and friends at this very sad time.

A tribute to the late John Spare OBE by Greg Clark MP for Tunbridge Wells

It is a great shock to lose John Spare, one of Tunbridge Wells' most influential and respected citizens and, at the time, the youngest ever Mayor of our Borough.

John's vision and talent helped made Tunbridge Wells the thriving place it is today. As longstanding Leader of the Borough Council, John oversaw the creation of Royal Victoria Place, made Tunbridge Wells a by-word for financial soundness and encouraged the vibrant tapestry of voluntary organisations in the Borough, including creating what is now Voluntary Action Within Kent (VAWK).

Highly intelligent and shrewd, John made up his own mind rather than simply going with the herd. It made him a valuable source of wise counsel to his successors, Leaders of the Council, Members of Parliament and to the many people who came to him for advice.

John will be greatly missed not only for his warmth and stimulating company but as one of the people who made Tunbridge Wells a place that is loved by so many.

Our sympathy goes to his wife, Pam, and his son, Simon.
